Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping? Causes and Safe Next Steps

By the Riyadh Plumbing & Electrical technical team · Updated 6 October 2026

A breaker that trips is doing its job: protecting the cable and the people in the house. But when it keeps happening — especially in a Riyadh summer with every AC running — it is a sign something needs attention. This guide explains the common causes and what you can safely check.

Three different kinds of trip

Knowing which device tripped helps find the cause:

  • A circuit breaker (MCB) usually trips because of an overload or a short circuit on that circuit.
  • A residual-current device (RCD/earth leakage) trips when current leaks to earth — often from moisture, a faulty appliance or damaged insulation.
  • The main breaker tripping can mean the whole house is drawing more than the supply allows, or a serious fault.

The most common causes in Riyadh homes

  • Several AC units on one circuit, or an AC circuit with a breaker or cable that is too small.
  • A faulty appliance — kettles, washing machines and water heaters are frequent culprits.
  • Moisture in outdoor sockets, lights or the water heater connection.
  • A loose or burnt connection in a socket, isolator or the distribution board.
  • Damaged cable, for example from a nail or drill during renovation work.

What you can safely check

  • Note which breaker trips and what was switched on at the time.
  • Unplug everything on that circuit, reset the breaker, then plug items back one by one. If one appliance trips it each time, that appliance is the likely cause.
  • If the RCD trips after rain or cleaning, moisture may be the cause — keep the circuit off and call an electrician.

Never hold a breaker up, tape it, or replace it with a larger one. A bigger breaker on the same cable can let the cable overheat.

When the cause is the AC load

In summer, the most common call we get is a breaker tripping when the AC starts. The solution is usually a dedicated circuit for each larger unit, with the right cable size and breaker, rather than sharing one circuit between several units. An electrician can measure the current with the AC running to confirm this.

Safety

When to stop and call a professional

Call an electrician immediately — and keep the circuit off — if you smell burning, see scorch marks, hear buzzing from the board, or a breaker trips again the moment you reset it.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is a tripping breaker dangerous?

The trip itself is protection working. Repeated tripping means there is a fault or an overload that should be fixed.

Can I just replace the breaker?

Only with the correct rating for the cable, and only by a qualified electrician.
